Baby Friendly Initiative

A pledge from the healthcare providers at High River Maternity: we are committed to supporting you.

In 2017, High River Hospital was the first hospital in Alberta to achieve the Baby-Friendly designation. This is joint intiative between the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) targeted at promoting and supporting breastfeeding.

As healthcare providers, we are COMMITTED to helping you and your family achieve the best possible health.

We will be COMPETENT providers of breastfeeding assistance through staff education.

We will SUPPORT parents with information, exploration of their concerns, and provide access to resources to make informed decisions regarding infant feeding.

We will ENCOURAGE the initiation of skin-to-skin contact at all births including planned Caesarean sections, as well as breastfeeding on demand.

We will REFRAIN from introducing food or drink other than breastmilk to breastfed newborns, unless medically necessary.

We will maintain STRONG CONNECTIONS with Public Health Postpartum Services and community breastfeeding support services to facilitate mothers to have the best breastfeeding relationships with their infants as possible.

We also have a lactation consultant onsite to help with breastfeeding concerns in our pregnant or postpartum patients.
