Prenatal Care and Delivery

Thank you for referring your patient to the High River Maternity Clinic.

Healthcare providers can download printable PDF copies of our referral form here. Please fill out this form in lieu of a referral letter.

For urgent consults during office hours, please call 403-652-0133 and fax this form to 403-652-0198; outside office hours, call 403-652-0146 to reach the provider on call and fax this form to 403-601-6640.

We are happy to see patients as early as 8 weeks gestation and will accept patients until 20 weeks gestation.  We follow patients until 6 weeks postpartum.

Please note, we are a low risk maternity clinic and do not accept the following patients:

  • Women desiring a trial of labour after C-section (we will see patients for elective repeat C-sections)
  • Women with complex pre-existing medical conditions (such as type 1 or 2 diabetes, hypertension, Crohn’s disease, etc.)
  • Women with a pre-pregnancy BMI ≥38
  • Women after 20 weeks gestation (unless extenuating circumstances apply)

These women would need to be referred to a tertiary care center in either Calgary or Lethbridge.  Usually the city obstetricians will assume care about 26-30 weeks gestation. If you do not feel comfortable providing prenatal care for your higher risk pregnant patients, we can see them until they are accepted into an obstetrics practice in the city.  It may also be possible to offer the patient shared care with Calgary’s obstetricians.

If possible, we suggest the following be
done prior to referral:

  • Lab work
    • Routine lab req: CBC, ferritin, TSH (only if symptomatic or personal or family history of thyroid dysfunction), urinalysis, urine C&S, urine gonorrhea and chlamydia
    • Alberta Prenatal Lab req: ABO/Rh and antibodies, HIV, HBsAg, syphilis, rubella, varicella (regardless of past exposure)
  • Pap test (if patient is already due)
  • Ultrasounds
    • Dating ultrasound between 8-10 weeks gestation with a minimum crown rump length (CRL) of 7 mm

If these are not done prior to the first prenatal appointment with us, we will arrange the testing and review the results with the patient at their second prenatal visit.
